There are many factors that are decisive in picking the right PCI Graphics Card. On one hand, you have video output incorporated into the motherboard itself, eliminating the need for a separate graphics card entirely.
On the other hand, you have companies trying to persuade you to use multiple cards on the same PC.
Graphics cards predominantly come in two flavors, PCI and the AGP and both the formats have plenty of variants.
PCI has a PCI-e (express) variant and AGP has an AGP 8X variant, but all will fit in their respective slots. The first thing you gotta’ do is to figure out what motherboard you have (it’s mentioned on motherboard itself, so don’t worry) and look up the specs on the manufacturer’s website to find out what format it uses.
The currently the PCI-e is the out performer, which is about four times as fast as AGP 8X, and since PCIe is so much faster than AGP, card makers must migrate there or lose the ability to be competitive. If you have an AGP motherboard, consider whether it is worth upgrading to a board with PCIe.
Now, when the discussion comes to purchasing PCI Graphics Card, the most important aspect is the purpose of usage.

The graphic card, also called a video card, is primarily responsible for handling the calculations necessary to determine where and when pixels will fire and in what colour, which is critical in any high end graphics application like gaming.
